I take your point about the maze solvers being the climax.

One useful side-effect of having the drag race after the maze solvers is 
that it is quick and easy to score while allowing the organisers to 
prepare the certificates for the other classes.

It does not matter to me where the event goes really. For most mice, 
entry to the drag race is a software change anyway. Originally, I 
thought of it only as a side-show for maze solvers. The contact racers 
do have the potential to harm the maze. The original intention was as a 
way for builders to benchmark maze-solvers' dynamic performance - no 
more, no less.
