Where on earth has the figure 17mm come from? Is this a change for changes sake? We had no problems with the current 10mm, so see no reason to change it. I designed a sensor system that seemed to work for all competitiors for 2004 competition. I have passed details to Martin Barrett such that he can build one for RHUL. I am more than happy to pass on our front end software to anyone ... it does, however, require that the embedded software follows a very specific protocol. We will be working on this over the next few months, so will be happy to publish all details when/where applicable. Perhaps I should volunteer TIC to provide the de facto standard timing system? I will be happy to work colloaboratively with Martin Barrett to produce this. Accepting Rule 5 as the "1mm version", subject to any further comments, let us move on to rule 6. "6. A start sensor may be placed at the boundary between the starting unit square and the next unit square. A destination sensor may be placed at the entrance to the destination square. The light beam from each sensor will be horizontal and positioned 1 cm above the floor." It would make sense to try and specify the sensor a bit better. Personally, I would like some volunteer to design a suitable sensor and place all the information needed to replicate it on a website. Something that records the time, in milliseconds since reset, that the beam is broken and sends it up a serial link would do the job. As at least three sensing systems have already been designed and used in the U.K., is it possible that the designer of one of these would allow it to be put into the public domain? There may also be an issue with the height above the floor. 10mm is great for downwards looking sensors and sideways sensors, but it is a bit low for "vision" systems looking at the black/white boundary between the wall and the floor. 17mm or so would seem to be a more equitable choice. Regards, Duncan
