Making a micromouse

Hi
I am considering making a micromouse with a motorola 68hc11 microcontroller 
(the handy board) and I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers 
about the programming side as I have had virtually no experience in any 'C' 
language. Specific points I am struggling with are the incorporation of stepper 
motors into the design and the basic programming of a maze solving algorithm. 
Any help anyone could offer me would be brilliant. Thankyou very much.
