RE: Cheap Motors
Two cents-worth from down under.
Has anyone thought of murdering the brushless DC motors that are used as
fans to cool PC chips? The brushless motor is a sort of hybrid evolution of
a stepper motor. For that matter, so is a cheap DC motor. In the cheap
motor, the commutator keeps the excitation 'one step ahead' of the present
position, while a brushless motor uses an internal sensor and electronics to
switch it.
So if the massacre is deep, making contact with the actual drive coils of
the motor rather than the 'outside' of the drive electronics, it might be
possible to get motive power and coarse rotation sensing in one hit!
(Connecting 'outside' the electronics in the normal way obviously restricts
you to one direction of rotation!)
