Would you have the mice/contestants search the maze as a preliminary run
or should they have the layout pre-programmed at the start?

I guess the latter if this is to be a standard, racing maze.

I would suggest a couple of U-Turns be added to stress test cornering.
Maybe something like this:

          o o o o o o o o o o o
          |#############################|
          o--o--o--o--o--o--o--o--o--o##o
        8 | | | |##|
          o o o--o o--o--o o o o##o
        7 | | | | | |##|
          o o--o o--o o--o--o--o--o##o
        6 | |##| | |###########|
          o o##o--o o--o o##o--o--o--o
        5 | |#####| |##|
          o o##o o--o--o--o##o
        4 | |## ###########|
          o o##o o o o o o
        3 | |## |
          o o##o o o o o o
        2 | |## |
          o o##o o o o o o
        1 | |## |
          o o##o o o o o o
        0 | |## |
          o--o--o--o--o--o--o--o

This will still fit into an 8x4 with a straight added (the join would be
a natural place to find a bump)
